When Pantone began choosing their Colour of the Year over 20 years ago, nobody could have known that their announcements would become one of the most eagerly awaited events of the design world each year, especially Pantone‘s team itself. A relatively unknown company at the time, Pantone is now one of the biggest influences on product development and purchasing decisions in many sectors, including fashion, furniture design and industrial design, as well as packaging and graphic design.
Pantone‘s selection process involves a thorough analysis of trends. In order to come to a decision each year, Pantone‘s Colour Experts travel the world and study all aspects of life in order to determine the biggest new colour influences for the new year.
In order to create a full experience around the 2020 Colour of the Year reveal, Pantone collaborated with other companies to create the smell, sound, taste and texture of Classic Blue. These collaborations produced a suede like fabric sample, a musk and sea salt scented candle, a blue, berry-flavoured jelly and “Vivid Nostalgia” a three minute long audio track.
